Texas Is #1 in Food Insecurity. Here’s Why Every Child Deserves Better.

Yesterday, new data from Feeding America confirmed a heartbreaking reality: Texas ranks #1 in the nation for food insecurity. More than 5.4 million Texans don’t know where their next meal will come from, including 1.67 million children—roughly one in every five children in our state.

Statistics like these are easy to read and just as easy to move past.

But behind every number is a child.

A child who sits in class wondering when they’ll eat again.

A teenager who skips lunch so a younger sibling has enough food at home.

A student who can’t focus on a math lesson because their stomach hurts from hunger.

At 5 Loaves Ministries, these aren’t statistics—we know these children by name.

Hunger Doesn’t End at the Dinner Table

When a child doesn’t have consistent access to nutritious food, the effects reach far beyond an empty stomach.

Physically, food insecurity can affect healthy growth, weaken the immune system, increase illness, and contribute to both malnutrition and chronic health conditions. Children experiencing hunger often have lower energy levels, making it difficult to participate in school, sports, and everyday childhood activities.

Emotionally, the burden can be just as devastating.

Children facing food insecurity experience higher rates of anxiety, depression, stress, and feelings of shame. Many worry about whether there will be enough food at home or feel responsible for helping their families stretch every meal. Hunger steals more than nutrition—it steals peace of mind.

The Long-Term Impact

Research continues to show that childhood hunger can affect a person’s future long after childhood ends.

Food insecurity is linked to:

  • Lower academic achievement and difficulty concentrating in school.
  • Increased behavioral and emotional challenges.
  • Poorer physical and mental health as adults.
  • Lower lifetime earning potential.
  • A greater likelihood of remaining trapped in the cycle of poverty.

That’s why our work has always been about much more than providing groceries.

A bag of food may feed a family today.

But investing in children changes tomorrow.

Through our Backpack Program, Healthy Kids, Healthy Choices, Summer Feeding Program, and other family support initiatives, we’re working to ensure children don’t just survive—they have the opportunity to thrive.

The Reality Here in North Texas

The need isn’t somewhere else.

It’s right here.

Across the North Texas region, nearly 1.4 million people experience food insecurity, including more than 500,000 children. In the Dallas-Fort Worth area, one in four children is now experiencing hunger. Even more concerning, over half of food-insecure families earn too much to qualify for SNAP assistance, leaving community organizations like 5 Loaves Ministries to help bridge the gap.

These are our neighbors.

Our classmates.

Our future leaders.

How You Can Help Change This Story

The good news is that hunger is a problem we can solve—together.

Here’s how you can make an immediate difference:

Volunteer. Every hour you give helps food reach families faster.

Host a Food Drive. Rally your workplace, church, school, or neighborhood to collect the pantry items our families need most.

Spread the Word. Share our mission on social media and help others understand that hunger exists in every ZIP code—including ours.

Give Financially. Monetary gifts allow us to purchase food in bulk, rescue more fresh products, and respond quickly when families need help most.

More Than a Meal. A Path to Hope.

Texas may rank first in food insecurity today.

But together, our community can become first in compassion.

Every meal provided tells a child:

“You matter.”

“Someone sees you.”

“There is hope.”

Thank you for standing with us as we work toward a future where no child has to wonder where their next meal will come from.
